Aces for Spaces
The Francis Farm in Rehoboth was home to a different type of poker game
this weekend, where players competed against each other not for their
own pocket books but instead played some hands for charity. Non-profit
human services agency Alternatives hosted a game of Texas Hold’Em poker
on Saturday February 25th. Area residents who participated in the event
put down money for a pot that, instead of going to the winner, went to
fund the Wrentham Community Garden, a charitable venture funded by
Alternatives.
The group rents out pieces of land on the garden property for residents
of the property to use as they deem best, and reserves two plots for
volunteers to plant. Crops grown on these plots are given away to local
soup kitchens, retirement homes, and other services which help people
that are down on their luck or otherwise in need.
Space, food, and bar services for the charity Hold’Em tournament was
provided by Francis Farm. The Farm has close ties with both Alternatives
and the Wrentham Community Garden, as several volunteers tied to both
groups frequent the Farm. These people were also on hand for Saturday’s
tournament.
The $30 buy-in allowed participants a seat at one of several tables,
where they played elimination rounds of the ever more popular Texas
Hold’Em, until a handful remained. The final players then played off,
with the winner taking a cash prize of $400, the runner up player taking
home $150, and third place receiving $50. A 50/50 raffle was also held
at the halfway point of the event, and the prize of $60 went to Jakie
Yuski form Rehoboth. The event raised $30 for the Wrentham Community
Garden, and according to the Garden’s president Elsie Morrison, it was a
big success, despite cold weather which also brought about poor
visibility for anyone interested in driving to the game to participate.
